Barcelona's finest...

Our full day of Barcelona was FANTASTIC. The weather was out of this world and we saw the whole city between our bike tour and the gondola (aka funicular). The Fat Tire Bike Tour is a company originally started by an Aggie in Paris and has now spread to several cities around Europe. It's funny... the Aggie Network is never far away, in fact he preferentially hires Aggies as guides (little to our previous knowledge).

Our guide, Michael, was a riot of course giving us all kinds of sarcasm and history in one packed 4 hour tour of Barcelona. We saw city hall, the Palace of Ferdinand and Isabella where Christopher Columbus asked for money to go to the "New World," the Cathedral of Barcelona, the Spanish Arc de Triomph (not as grand as Paris), Lorikeets in Central Park, bull fighting arena, Sagrada familia (and a history lesson on Gaudi, the famous architect), Olympic Village and port and of course THE BEACH. We spend about 45 minutes or so at a little tapas restaurant where I had sangria, cheese tapas and a little sandwich.And... believe it or not, as if the world isn't small enough, Kati went to middle school and high school with our bike guide's cousin. Crazy!

Then Kati and I were on our own to discover the rest of Barcelona. With only a map, we did our usual wander around the city in which we found an antique market filled with all kinds of affordable treasures in the part of town called Barri Gotic. We found an open market where we indulged in freshly squeeze fruit juice and I ate a new fruit, pitahaya. It was sort of like a pink kiwi, but with less flavor. Interesting for sure.

Then we conquered Kati's fear of heights with a ride up Montjuic where there was a castle and amazing views of the city... Then of course we walked in our usual wandering fashion down to the Olympic Stadium, National Palace and the Magic Fountains which actually weren't running until the next day... We ate crepes and then tried to catch the Picasso museum, but it had already closed. So we settled on dinner where we ate Paella (traditional chicken and rice casserole dish) and called it an early night. We had to leave the next morning for San Sebastian at 6:40 AM!
